$18

Express your joy with the fun, energetic movements of this upbeat dance from Senegal. Often performed at celebrations like weddings, naming ceremonies and other happy occasions, this dance is a showcase of fast footwork influenced by the sands of Senegal against the backdrop of polyrhythmic drum beats. Class begins with a dynamic warm-up that incorporates Sabar technique. Students then get moving with choreography that will have you popping your lapa (wrap skirt) across the dance floor.  Enjoy learning Sabar in this class with live drumming.

Ousmane Sall is a master dancer/choreographer and drummer from Senegal. He excels in all Senegalese styles of drum and dance, and specializes in the Kutiro rhythms. Born into a traditional Senegalese family of drummers and dancers, Ousmane was formally trained at the National Dance Academy and has performed for many years with the second national dance group of Senegal, National Ballet Senemew and Silimbo D’Adeane. He’s also performed extensively at venues like The United Nations, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. As a teacher, Ousmane brings a warmth into the classroom that encourages each student to feel free to open up to the rhythms of the drums and spirit of the dance.
