When frustration with violent, over-policing boiled over at the Stonewall Inn on June 27, 1969, Black & Brown transwomen were on the frontlines, leading the charge in six days of rioting. The fight for LGBTQ+ lives has always been Black and Brown. The fight against state sanctioned violence has always been Black & Brown. When people talk about Black Lives Matter as they’re marching through the streets this summer, the names of George Floyd & Breonna Taylor ring out. But what of Nina Pop, Monika Diamond & Tony McDade, Black Trans individuals who were victims of violence? A spirit of rebellion lives at the crux of contemporary LGBTQ+ culture. In this time of civil unrest, how are the voices of LGBTQ+ Black people contributing to, disrupting & erased by the Black Lives Matter Movement?
