Afro-Haitian Contemporary Dance with Raphaelle Francois

  • Cumbe: Center for African and Diaspora Dance 1368 Fulton Street Brooklyn United States (map)

In Person
$20

Raphaelle's Afro-Haitian Contemporary class will incorporate a fusion of contemporary/modern movement with Haitian folkloric dance. Participants will get to explore the coming together of both traditions as a mode for self expression through movement.

Born in Haiti, Raphaelle Francois started dancing at nine years old at Artcho Danse, a highly distinguished dance school in Haiti. She was trained in Modern, Jazz, Contemporary, Classical and Ballroom dance. However, inspired by Haitian folklore, she decided to specialize in Afro-Contemporary dance.  At the age of 12, she became a member of the Artcho Danse school company and launched a professional career that took her around the world.

Raphaelle has performed and taught workshops in various prestigious institutions such as Tokyo National Ballet in Japan, Quartier in Paris, Carnegie Hall and Ballet Hispanico in New York, the Ballet Roto in the Dominican Republic and Cyprus in Jamaica where she promoted Haitian culture. She has also choreographed several pieces, such as "Ti Mari" (Haiti) and "Y continuamos" (at Edanco Dance Festival in the Dominican Republic).

She is currently working on a series of workshops called Vin Danse Ak Raphaelle (Come Dance With Raphaelle) around the world where she teaches basic Haitian folkloric technique.
