Come join us for the exciting chance to ignite your inner attitude with this special Flamenco workshop exploring Spanish rhythms of the African Diaspora. Tangos Flamencos are an upbeat, energetic Flamenco palo (style of song in Spanish Flamenco), distinguished by a heavily accented rhythm. The African influences can be seen in the dance, particularly in the relaxed knees, freedom of the pelvis and hips and percussive use of the body. This workshop will include a brisk warm-up, technique exercises focused on building upper and lower body strength and developing musicality, exercises that will take across the floor and dance combinations. Pájaro Negro (Aliesha Bryan) is a Bronx-based Flamenco dancer and choreographer. She has been a repeat performer at the Fashion Institute of Technology and United Nations Headquarters, and has made appearances on international stages, such as Peña la Platería in Granada, Spain and the Victoria Flamenco Festival in British Columbia. Seeking to deepen her voice, she has participated in events like The Body Questions: Celebrating Flamenco's Tangled Roots and the screening of the documentary film Gurumbé: Canciones de tu memoria negra, where, in addition to performing, she participated in discussions and audience talk-backs. This year she will make a repeat appearance in The Brooklyn Ballet's The Brooklyn Nutcracker. Her performance work has been recognized and supported by numerous awards, including several scholarships to continue her Flamenco studies abroad, a Bronx Recognizes Its Own award, and has been short-listed for a New York Live Arts Fresh Tracks Residency.
