Dunham Technique is a vibrant African American dance form that engages the body, mind and spirit! Created by dance pioneer Katherine Dunham, the technique is informed by the traditional dances of the African Diaspora, as well as by modern and ballet. Dunham Technique creates strong, dynamic dancers who embody rhythm and grace. Classes will offer a variety of experiences, including breathing, isolations, floor work, barre work and progressions across the floor. Dancers will explore the intersection of Dunham technique and high-spirited, folkloric-inspired movement. In this intermediate class, dancers will explore advanced Dunham work and longer, more complex combinations.

Celia Benvenutti is an Afro-Latina dance artist, native Detroiter, and Howard University alumna. She has been studying dance for the past 25 years under the tutelage of Madame Penny Godboldo, lecturer of dance at the University of Michigan and Certified Dunham Technique Dance instructor. Benvenutti’s background includes extensive training in the Dunham Technique, classical ballet, modern (Horton and Graham), jazz, traditional African, and Afro-Caribbean dances. She focuses on creating choreography centered in the Afro-Caribbean vocabulary fused with Dunham Technique
