Continuing our month long exploration of liberation, representation is not enough. How do we imagine, and build an art world from the ashes of white supremacy, and plant seeds of justice in the soil of our ancestors. CUMBE invites Brittany Williams to explore through movement, and deep study ways we can play a role in unearthing and decolonizing our body and art practices and while dismantling anti-blackness and white supremacy within the art world.

Brittany Williams a womanist, freedom fighter, organizer and artist - is an international dancer, choreographer, and organizer originally from Homestead Florida. Brittany is a 2017 Dancing While Black Fellow and an Artist in Resident at the Restoration Plaza in Brooklyn New York. She is a 2016 Jacob’s Pillow Scholarship recipient for the Program, Dance & Improv Traditions; a principal dancer with Olujimi Dance; the founder of Dancing for Justice and Obika Dance Projects. Brittany has worked with Jaamil Olawale Kosoko, Yon Tande, Makeda Thomas, Chris Walker, Michelle Grant- Murray, Urban Bush Women, Forces of Nature and more.

Cumbe Café is a gathering of creative, artistic and culturally forward thinking minds seeking a deeper understanding and appreciation for African and African Diaspora culture. This monthly interactive lecture series will explore a variety of topics that affect African Diaspora culture and its people from a historic, political and philosophical perspective.

Meant as a compliment to our ongoing dance and music classes and programming, Cumbe Café offers our community a conversational way to be introduced to, or learn more about, the styles and cultures we represent. Ranging from intimate dialogues and panel discussions to artistic presentations and sing alongs, Cumbe Café creates an environment of learning, community and joy through the championing of African Diaspora culture.
