Cumbe Café: Getting Grounded – A Day at the Farm with Waunette Cullors

Lecture
Donation $0 - 25

Happy Earth Day! Let’s take a virtual trip to the farm with Waunette Cullors, founder of The WOW Flower Project, for an in-depth look at the different ways Black and Brown people use a connection to the earth to foster healing and build community. Through farming and gardening, Waunette empowers the community of Palmdale, CA to literally get their hands dirty to demystify food, healthy eating, and environmental responsibility. After taking a look at the ways people connect to the earth in Mali, Belize, Congo, Colombia and Brazil, let’s bring that dialogue state-side to meet the goats and pigs of WOW and have a meaningful conversation about the role environmentalism plays on the road to liberation.

Waunette Cullors has served on a multitude of executive boards committed to advancing the African American community, including being Vice-Chair of the NAACP, President of the Friends of Jackie Robinson Park, and Director of the Antelope Valley Black Chamber of Commerce. Cullors is the founder and Executive Director of The WOW Flower Project, a non-profit organization with the primary objective of introducing youth to the world of Arts, Wellness, Education, and Horticulture.

Cumbe Café is a gathering of creative, artistic and culturally forward thinking minds seeking a deeper understanding and appreciation for African and African Diaspora culture. This monthly interactive lecture series will explore a variety of topics that affect African Diaspora culture and its people from a historic, political and philosophical perspective.

Meant as a compliment to our ongoing dance and music classes and programming, Cumbe Café offers our community a conversational way to be introduced to, or learn more about, the styles and cultures we represent. Ranging from intimate dialogues and panel discussions to artistic presentations and sing alongs, Cumbe Café creates an environment of learning, community and joy through the championing of African Diaspora culture.
