Join us for an exploration of West Africa through dance! Class begins with a warm-up that is designed to improve flexibility, strengthen the core, improve stamina, and get acquainted with West African music. The second part of the class starts with a brief history and context of the dances (that will inform your execution of the movements) and continues with an extensive breakdown of technique. Then, you’ll practice what you’ve learned in repetition.
This course is typically taught by Dr. Darian Parker. But through October, we will welcome a variety of guests.
Mouminatou Camara founded Seewe African Dance Company in September 2005 and was principal dancer of the world-renowned dance company, Les Ballet Africans, for a decade. She also performed with Les Ballet Djoliba and the Army Ballet, and has performed and taught workshops extensively in the USA, Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Martinique, and the West African countries of Senegal, Mali, and the Ivory Coast. Affectionately called “Moumi,” she says she's been dancing since she was in her mother's womb. Mouminatou brings first-hand knowledge of the history of each dance, and shares her knowledge with clarity and passion with her students.
